Haldwani, Feb. 13 -- A murder investigation was launched after bludgeoned bodies of a 31-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were found lying in the Mandi (grain) market area on Bareilly Road in Haldwani on Thursday, police said, adding that six special teams have been formed to probe into the matter. According to police, the bodies were spotted by traders early morning when they came to the market to open their shops, following which the police were immediately informed around 7.30 am. Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Nainital, Manjunath TC, said: "After receiving information, a police team rushed to the spot, took possession of the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination." The SSP said a preliminary probe revealed extreme brutality. "The victims' faces appeared to have been crushed with stones. A blood-stained stone was also recovered from near the bodies. A forensic team has been deployed and is collecting scientific evidence to assist in the investigation," he said. The deceased were identified on the basis of Aadhaar cards recovered from their pockets as Shubham alias Golu Tamta (31), a resident of Mall Road, Talla Kholta in Almora district, and Laxmi Pokhariya (19), a resident of Talli Pokhari, Ramgarh area in Nainital district. Police said another Aadhaar card found in Shubham's pocket mentioned his address in Champawat district. Providing further details, the SSP said Shubham had earlier worked at a drug de-addiction centre and had also been jailed under the Arms Act in the past. The woman was a BSc second-year student. "The two were in a live-in relationship and stayed in a rented accommodation in the Mukhani area of Haldwani," he said. Police are now probing the circumstances of the crime. "We are investigating why and how the two reached the Mandi area and whether the murders took place there or if they were killed elsewhere and their bodies dumped in Haldwani," the SSP said. Six special investigation teams have been formed to probe into the case. "So far, four suspects have been detained and are being interrogated. We are pursuing all possible leads," the SSP said....
