Traffic diversions make city crawl again
LUCKNOW, Jan. 20 -- Traffic moved at snail's pace across the city as police enforced multiple diversions in view of the 86th All-India Presiding Officers' Conference and the 62nd Conference of Secretaries, which began on Monday.
Though the restrictions were officially imposed mainly in central and southern parts of the city from January 19 to 21, their impact was felt far beyond the notified zones. Motorists across Lucknow reported long delays, especially during peak afternoon hours.
With vehicular movement restricted towards The Centrum hotel where delegates are staying, Shaheed Path witnessed long queues of vehicles in the afternoon. The traffic load on Shaheed Path spilled over to Faizabad road, where vehicles were seen inching forward at snail's pace.
Public transport was also affected. Buses coming from the KKC intersection towards Charbagh and Vidhan Sabha were diverted via Loco Chauraha, Cantonment and Burlington Chowk to Qaiserbagh. The diversions further choked the Cantonment area, leading to heavy congestion on Mall Avenue and other connecting roads.
Several buses were stuck near the Qaiserbagh bus stand while five ambulances were also caught in the jam near Balrampur Hospital and City Station, causing difficulty for patients and their relatives. Traffic was seen crawling near Lucknow Christian College as well.
Commuters expressed frustration over extended travel times, while traffic police said the diversions were necessary to ensure smooth movement of conference delegates and security arrangements....
