Top Maoist Ganapathy may surrender soon
hyderabad, March 6 -- Most-wanted leader of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) Muppala Lakshmana Rao alias Ganapathy is likely to surrender before the Telangana police in a few days, people familiar with the matter said.
According to a senior official of the Telangana police, Ganapathy, 77, who had been suffering from serious health issues and hiding somewhere in Nepal for the last two years, had been brought to New Delhi a few days ago and kept under the protection of the special intelligence branch (SIB) police authorities.
"Senior Telangana police officials, including director general of police B Shivadhar Reddy, Intelligence Additional DGP Vijay Kumar, and SIB IGP B Sumathi have been camping in Delhi for the last two days and were overseeing the surrender process for Ganapathy," the official said.
On Wednesday night, Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy, along with the DGP, intelligence additional DGP and SIB chief, met Union home minister Amit Shah and briefed him about the recent surrender of top Maoist leaders from Telangana and Chhattisgarh, including Thippiri Tirupati alias Devji and Malla Rajireddy alias Sangram.
According to an official statement, Revanth Reddy told Shah that 591 Maoists had laid down their arms and joined the mainstream of society during in the last one year and the state government was providing them compensation and rehabilitation assistance as per the rules.
The official quoted above said that the chief minister also apprised the home minister about the possible surrender of Ganapathy in a few days. The state intelligence authorities are coordinating with the central intelligence bureau to formalise Ganapathy's surrender. "Before that, the central intelligence authorities are ascertaining about the status of other Maoist leaders, who are still active in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and other parts of the country," he said.
The formal surrender of Ganapathy and other remaining key leaders of the party along with their weapons marks the formal end of the left-wing extremism in India much before March 31 deadline set by the Centre.
