Three women killed in Sonbhadra mudslide
Varanasi, Feb. 24 -- Three women died and two others sustained injuries after a mudslide of a soil mound in Kirwani forest under the Myorpur police station area of Sonbhadra district on Monday, police said.
According to police, five women had gone to dig soil from a mound in the forest when the mud suddenly caved in, burying them under debris. Superintendent of Police Abhishek Verma said that police began rescue operations as soon as information was received. Despite all efforts, three women could not be saved. Their bodies were later recovered. The two injured women were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The deceased were identified as Sadikunisha ,35, a resident of Badhor under Babhani police station, Amisha Khatoon ,35, a resident of Kirwani, and Sita ,30, also a resident of Kirwani. The injured were identified as Azimunnusha and Phool Kumari. Preliminary investigation suggests that deep and unsafe excavation weakened the mound, leading to the accident. Further inquiry is under way. Sonbhadra district magistrate Badrinath Singh and superintendent of police Abhishek Verma inspected the spot. Sub-divisional magistrate Duddhi Nikhil Yadav and circle officer Duddhi Rajesh Rai were also present. Later, the SDM and CO visited the hospital, met the families of the deceased and offered condolences. Officials have assured compensation to the bereaved families. The SP said a probe into similar sites will be conducted in coordination with the Forest Department....
