Haridwar, Feb. 19 -- Haridwar police have solved the mysterious disappearance and murder of a 50-year-old seer, after arresting three family members who allegedly conspired to kill him, officers said on Wednesday. Brijesh Das, associated with the Ravi Das Ashram in Bhagwanpur, went missing on February 5. A missing person's report was lodged on February 10 at Bhagwanpur police station after a complaint from ashramite Shyam Singh. A joint team from the station and the crime investigation unit probed the case, zeroing in on Shashi-a woman in telephonic contact with the seer that day. Police said Das knew Shashi, her husband Sanjeev Pal and his brother Jogendra, and visited their home often. Shashi claimed during questioning that the seer had exerted mental and financial pressure, claiming that he had provided monetary help for the marriages of her two nieces. The trio allegedly plotted to kill him. On February 5, Shashi called Das to their Baghpat house, where Sanjeev attacked him with an axe, inflicting fatal injuries. "Sanjeev Pal, along with his wife and brother, killed the seer. After the murder, Sanjeev and Jogendra transported the body on a motorcycle and disposed it of in the Krishna river. They also attempted to destroy evidence by burning the seer's mobile phone, his clothes and the bedsheet used to carry the body," senior superintendent of police Navneet Singh said, adding, "The three accused were arrested on Tuesday and then questioned." A case is registered against them under sections 103 (murder), 61 (criminal conspiracy) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The senior superintendent said a search at the river site, with Baghpat police help, recovered the body on Tuesday evening, plus a damaged mobile phone, burnt clothes remnants and a bedsheet. Police seized the axe used in the murder. Further legal proceedings are underway....
