Three girls drown in canal in Pratapgarh
PRAYAGRAJ, March 6 -- Three minor girls, including two sisters, drowned while bathing in a canal in the Sangramgarh area of Pratapgarh district on Thursday afternoon. Rescue teams and villagers searched for several hours but could not trace the girls till evening, police said.
The incident took place in the Prayagraj branch canal near Khanwari village under the Sangramgarh police station limits. According to police, a group of children had gone to the canal to wash off colours after celebrating Holi earlier in the day.
The victims were identified as Aanchal ,14, Riya ,10, and Roshni ,9. Aanchal and Riya were daughters of Ram Naresh Patel, while Roshni was the daughter of Anil Patel. Another girl, Kajal ,12, sister of Aanchal and Riya, was also present but managed to come out of the water safely.
Police said the children had been playing with colours till late morning. Later in the afternoon, they went to the canal, which is about 500 metres from the village, to take a bath. While bathing, the girls entered a deep section of the canal and started drowning.
According to eyewitnesses, the girls tried to hold Satish, son of Harikrishna, who had also gone with them. Satish lost balance and began to sink but managed to free himself and swim out of the water.
Aanchal, Riya and Roshni were swept into deep water and went missing in a canal. Satish and Kajal raised the alarm. Villagers searched for hours. Police, including SHO Manoj Tomar and CO Ashutosh Mishra, and fire teams joined. The search continued till evening. An SDRF team from Prayagraj was called.htc...
