LUCKNOW, April 24 -- Three people drowned in the Ganga while trying to save a friend who slipped into deep water in Rae Bareli district on Thursday, police said. A fourth youth was rescued and is in critical condition. The incident occurred around 11 am at a ghat in Ranikheda village, under the Sareni police station area, about 55 km from the district headquarters. According to officials, two brothers-Harishankar (15) and Hariom (20)-along with their friends Satyendra (17) and Satyam (19), had gone to bathe in the river when Satyendra slipped and began to drown. In an attempt to rescue him, the other three entered deeper waters but were unable to stay afloat. All four youths were pulled out and taken for medical treatment, where doctors declared Harishankar, Hariom, and Satyendra dead. Satyam is currently undergoing treatment. Circle officer Amit Singh said police and divers responded promptly after receiving information, but the victims could not be saved.
