Dehradun, Feb. 5 -- The Opposition Congress on Wednesday attacked the state government over law and order in the state, terming the recent suspensions of three sub inspectors (SIs) over dereliction of duty as an "eyewash" and "grossly inadequate". On Tuesday, director general of police (DGP) Deepam Seth ordered the suspension of the three SIs, based on complaints over their handling of serious cases under their jurisdiction. In connection with a recent incident in which a woman was shot dead in Rishikesh, sub inspector Sahil Vashist in-charge of AIIMS Chowki was suspended for "negligence". Similarly, SI Pradyumna Negi in-charge of Khurbura chowki was suspended over the murder of a woman under Kotwali police station limits in Dehradun. Both cases were handed over to SP (Crime) Vishakha Bhadane, who was directed to submit a detailed inquiry report to the police headquarters within seven days. SI Surat Sharma, sub-inspector in-charge of Chudiyala, was suspended for negligence following clashes and firing between two groups during a Ravidas Jayanti procession in the Bhagwanpur police station area of Haridwar district. The case was entrusted to SP (Crime), Haridwar, Jitendra Mehra, who has also been asked to submit an inquiry report within seven days. State Congress vice-president Suryakant Dhasmana cited the three crimes and said that they showed that the law and order situation had "completely collapsed". "Fear of the police has vanished from the minds of criminals. The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that criminals are attacking and killing young women with sharp weapons in crowded areas like Paltan Bazaar in the state capital," Dhasmana said. He further said that Uttarakhand was already among the hill states with the highest cases of violence against women and was now giving "tough competition" to neighbouring Uttar Pradesh in murders, robberies and dacoity. "The Congress will gherao the Raj Bhawan on February 16 over the issue of law and order. The suspension of SIs is merely an eyewash and completely inadequate," he added....
