Suspended magistrate's residence in spotlight over Rs.23-lakh power dues
MEERUT, Feb. 24 -- The official residence of the city magistrate in Bareilly located inside the ADM compound is again in the spotlight after the electricity department initiated action to recover 'outstanding dues of around Rs.23 lakh' in its name. The district administration had issued a recovery certificate (RC).
However, the power department later withdrew the notice issued to the residence last occupied by suspended Bareilly magistrate Alankar Agnihotri, citing a clerical mistake. The notice was reportedly issued on February 21.
According to officials, the executive engineer of the commercial section-II office in Rampur Garden sent a recommendation letter to the district magistrate on January 27 seeking issuance of RCs against electricity bill defaulters. As soon as the recommendations seeking recovery from the city magistrate's residence reached the Collectorate's collection section, the matter became a subject of intense discussion.
After official stamping and signatures by the collection section in-charge, RCs for recovery of dues, including those against the city magistrate's residence, were forwarded to Sadar Tehsil. Officials said Rs.2,273,932 is pending as electricity charges in the name of the city magistrate residence.
Executive engineer Surya Kumar said the correspondence sent to the district magistrate recommending recovery of dues from the city magistrate's residence and the party office as land revenue was issued inadvertently. He said since many such RCs were processed in bulk through the administration, the letters related to these two cases have now been withdrawn....
