Sparks, smoke in moving CNG bus trigger panic, passengers jump off
LUCKNOW, April 22 -- Panic spread among passengers aboard a moving CNG city bus in Lucknow late on Monday evening after smoke and sparks allegedly emerged from the engine, forcing several commuters to jump off in fear for their lives. Officials said an explanation has been sought.
The incident occurred in the PGI police station area when the bus was travelling from Kamta to Scooters India. Eyewitnesses alleged that smoke started emerging from the engine nearly 3 to 4 km before the vehicle was finally brought to a halt.
The bus with registration number UP 32 DN 2928, operated from the Dubagga depot, eventually stopped near the Shaheed Path service lane in Utrahtia after the smoke intensified. Officials said the situation became chaotic because the bus was carrying around 56 passengers in a 39-seater vehicle.
Amar Nath Sahay, city transport managing director, said the bus should have been stopped immediately after complaints were received. "The assistant regional manager has been asked to provide an explanation," he added.
The bus is part of an ageing CNG fleet introduced in 2008 and has already been listed for auction in the coming days.
