SP MLAs walk out from assembly
LUCKNOW, Feb. 20 -- Samajwadi Party members staged a walkout in the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly on Thursday on the issue of alleged poor fertiliser supply to farmers in the state.
The walkout at 11.40am followed the Opposition members expressing their disagreement with agriculture minister Surya Pratap Shahi's reply.
During Question Hour, Samarpal Singh (SP) asked a question about harmful pesticides/chemicals allegedly being used by farmers
For his part, Samajwadi Party member Shivpal Yadav said, "At cooperative societies, farmers have to wait in queue for days together."
While the agriculture minister read his reply, Samajwadi Party members staged a walkout while shouting slogans. Pankaj Malik, Pallavi Patel, Ragini Sonkar and Kamal Akhtar were among the SP members who staged the walkout.
Speaker Satish Mahana then continued the Question Hour. At least seven questions had to be skipped temporarily due to members' absence.
They were later taken up on the members' request when they returned to the House.
Regarding the question on harmful pesticides, the minister said 49 pesticides are banned for production and use, while five others are banned for use in India but not for manufacturing and export.
He said the Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee examines objections/suggestions received from various stakeholders such as industry associations and farmers, and takes action to restrict/prohibit harmful chemicals under the Insecticides Act, 1968, violations of which are punishable.
To a question about fertiliser scarcity, the minister informed the House that due to the use of balanced fertilisers in the country, standards have been set for providing a maximum quantity of DAP (five bags) and urea (seven bags) to the farmer based on agricultural land holding, in line with the quantity recommended by scientists for various crops....
