Seers, students hold rallies against new UGC regulations
PRAYAGRAJ/Varanasi, Jan. 29 -- Resentment is growing among seers and students in Prayagraj against the University Grants Commission's (UGC) Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations, 2026. On Wednesday, Dandi Sanyasis took out a protest rally in the Magh Mela area, demanding withdrawal of the proposed regulations, which they said would adversely affect the future of children.
Led by Jagadguru Shandilya, the saints marched from Dandibada to the banks of the Ganga via a pontoon bridge, where they performed Ganga Puja and reiterated their demand for the immediate rollback of the regulations.
Students also staged protests against the proposed UGC Equity Regulations, 2026. Raising slogans such as "UGC Go Back" and "UGC Roll Back," Allahabad University students marched from the Students' Union building to the District Magistrate's office.
A memorandum was submitted to Additional District Magistrate Vijay Sharma, urging the rollback of the regulations. Another memorandum was later submitted to the university registrar, demanding that the university administration write to the UGC seeking withdrawal of the new regulations.
In a separate demonstration, students led by Arpit Rai marched from the Allahabad University Students' Union building to Balson Crossing and submitted a memorandum to City North MLA Harshvardhan Bajpai. In Varanasi, Roshan Pandey, president of Rashtriya Hindu Dal wrote a letter using his blood to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and demanded the roll back of the UGC regulations.
Pandey said that the BJP has divided upper-caste Hindus and presented the UGC regulations as "surgical strike" against them....
