Dehradun, Feb. 6 -- Security has been heightened in Kotdwar town of Pauri Garhwal on Thursday, with around 200 personnel, including teams being called in from across district, days after communal tension erupted following an altercation involving a local gym owner and a group of Bajrang Dal members, an officer aware of the matter said. The incident occurred on January 26, when Deepak Kumar (46), a gym owner, allegedly confronted a group of Bajrang Dal workers who were harassing a 70-year-old Muslim shopkeeper over the name of his shop. The situation escalated after a video of the confrontation went viral on social media. Around 200 police personnel, including teams called in from outside the district, have been deployed across Kotdwar for patrolling, vehicle checks and questioning of suspicious individuals, police said, adding that social media platforms are also being closely monitored. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Pauri Garhwal, Sarvesh Panwar said police deployment has been made as a precautionary measure across the town to maintain peace. "Around 200 police personnel have been deployed. Several teams have been called in from different police stations within the district and from outside as well," he said. Responding to allegations that media persons were being prevented from entering Kotdwar, Panwar denied any such restriction. "No such orders have been issued. However, we are maintaining vigilance to ensure that no one enters the town with the intention of disturbing peace. Vehicle checking is being carried out at border points as a precaution," he said. In a statement issued on Thursday, the Pauri Police said a multi-layered security arrangement has been put in place in Kotdwar. Additional police personnel have been deployed at major roads, market areas, public and religious places, and other sensitive locations. Continuous monitoring is being carried out through foot patrols, mobile patrolling, night rounds and intensive checking, the statement said. "The security system has been further strengthened with the deployment of Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and the use of CCTV cameras and other technical resources. Strict action is being taken against anti-social elements attempting to disturb peace. Special vigilance is also being maintained against rumours and misleading information being spread on social media," the police said. According to Kumar, he was standing outside a friend's shop when Bajrang Dal members arrived at an outlet named "Baba School Dress and Matching Centre" and allegedly objected to the use of the word "Baba", claiming it referred to Baba Sidhbali, a local name associated with Lord Hanuman, whose temple is located in Kotdwar. As Kumar intervened, the workers allegedly asked his name, to which he replied that his name was Mohammad Deepak. The video of the exchange later went viral, triggering further tension. On January 31, a large group of Bajrang Dal workers staged a demonstration outside Kumar's gym in Kotdwar and threatened to "teach him a lesson". Three FIRs have been registered so far in connection with the matter - one on the complaint of the Muslim shopkeeper, Wakeel Ahmed; the second on a complaint by a Kotdwar resident against Deepak Kumar and his friend Vijay Rawat; and the third by a police official against unidentified Bajrang Dal members in connection with the January 31 incident. Panwar said the process of identifying those involved in the January 31 incident is underway. When asked why it was taking time despite the presence of clear visuals in viral videos, he said police personnel were currently engaged in maintaining law and order, adding that action would follow soon. The SSP also said police personnel have been deployed outside Kumar's residence and gym as a precaution, even though Kumar had not sought security....
