Sandhya's 4/27 helps UP outplay Baroda by nine wickets
LUCKNOW, Feb. 15 -- Left-arm spinner Sandhya Cheetri continued her fine run with a four-wicket haul as former runners-up Uttar Pradesh crushed Baroda by nine wickets to keep their hopes alive for a berth in the knockout of the Senior Women's One Day Trophy at Rajkot on Saturday.
With 12 points in five matches so far, Uttar Pradesh now have 12 points and stay in the third position behind table toppers Karnataka and Maharashtra (20 points each) in Elite Group A. Now, Uttar Pradesh will be required to win their remaining two league matches against Pondicherry on Monday and against Assam on Wednesday to stake a claim for a knockout berth.
Lucknow's Cheetri, who had four wickets in the previous match against Madhya Pradesh, showed her might once again, bagging 4/27 as hosts Baroda even while batting first after winning the toss, could make 158 in 42.5 overs, at the Niranjan Shah Stadium. In reply, Uttar Pradesh romped home in 29.5 overs, losing just a wicket.
Once Sonali Singh had the wicket of keeper-batter Nishant Chnagiwala (10) in the sixth over, Baroda started losing wickets on regular intervals. Chhetri took the wickets of Amrita Joseph (17), PN Khemnar (26), J Mohite (6) and Pragya Rawat (27). She was well supported by other spinner Archana Devi, who also took 2/30. Besides them, Shilpi Yadav and Khushi Tyagi shared two wickets between them.
Inform Varnika and Samapada Dixit didn't show any sign of discomfort against Baroda bowlers when Uttar Pradesh began the run chase, stitching together 85 runs for the opening wicket. A centurion in the match against Madhya Pradesh, Varnika smashed 55-ball 58 with the help of 10 hits to the fence and a six before being caught by Hani Patel off Kesha.
Even after losing Varnika, experienced Dixit kept the scoreboard ticking on at a fast pace, adding an unbeaten 74 runs for the second wicket. Dixit hit 60 in 77 balls with the help of eight boundaries, whereas Muskan Malik smashed 39 in 47 balls with the help of five boundaries....
