LUCKNOW, Jan. 29 -- A special CBI court here has convicted and sentenced Ram Nibas Verma, senior accountant at the Zonal Pay and Accounts Office of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in Aliganj, to five years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs.1 lakh in a bribery case, according to an official statement issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday. The CBI had registered the case on July 2, 2018, following a written complaint by a constable (general duty) of the 3rd Battalion, SSB, Lakhimpur Kheri. The complaint was forwarded by the chief vigilance officer at the SSB Force headquarters in New Delhi. As per the CBI, Verma had allegedly demanded an illegal gratification of Rs.4,000 from the complainant for clearing bills and allowances related to the 3rd Battalion. Acting on the complaint, the agency initiated an investigation. After completing its probe, the CBI filed a charge sheet against the accused on August 31, 2018. Charges were formally framed by the trial court on May 24, 2019.
