Rs 25L property stolen from Barabanki temple
LUCKNOW, Feb. 5 -- Property worth Rs 25 lakh was said to have been stolen from the Awsaneshwar Mahadev Temple in Barabanki district in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to police, burglars broke into the temple's sanctum sanctorum and decamped with a canopy of silver, silver plates fixed on vessels meant for rituals, and other items of religious significance weighing nearly 7-8 kg. "The total value of the stolen property was estimated at around Rs.25 lakh," the police said.
The theft at the temple located in the district's Haidergarh area came to light when its priest arrived there for daily rituals later in the morning and found the channel gate lock broken, and the temple ransacked.
CCTV footage from the temple premises and its nearby routes were being examined, the police said, adding preliminary clues suggested that one of the thieves was wearing a monkey mask.
Haidergarh station in-charge Abhimanyu Mall said the thieves entered the temple by breaking the channel gate's lock. "The incident is being investigated. Technical surveillance and CCTV analysis are underway, and efforts are on to crack the case at the earliest," he said.
The temple committee, in its complaint to the police, said the theft occurred between 2:30 am and 3 am, during which the silver canopy, silver-plated 'arghya', and cash from the donation box were stolen....
