Record 2.10 crore take dip of faith on Maghi Purnima
PRAYAGRAJ, Feb. 2 -- The Sangam banks witnessed a massive turnout of 2.10 crore pilgrims who took the sacred dip on Mauni Amavasya on Sunday, Magh Mela officials said.
The figure surpassed the 2.04 crore devotees who had performed the ritual on the occasion during last year's Mahakumbh and the previous Magh Mela events, they added.
The influx of pilgrims picked up at 5 am, with crowds swelling steadily through the morning hours.
Despite dense fog and biting winter cold, devotees continued arriving into the Triveni Sangam area keeping all ghats packed.
Senior officials from both the mela and district administrations remained on their toes from the early hours.
According to official figures released by Mela administration, 90 lakh devotees had taken the dip of faith by 8 am, 1.20 crore by 10 am, 1.5 crore by 12 noon, 1.82 crore by 2 pm and nearly 2 crore by 4 pm.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath extended his greetings to the devotees on X (formerly Twitter): "My congratulations and best wishes to all the devotees who have come to Tirthraj Prayag on Maghi Purnima and are taking a dip in the holy waters."...
