Rats nibble at body in Mirzapur mortuary
VARANASI, March 11 -- A health worker and sweeper at the Mirzapur divisional hospital have been served notice by the chief medical superintendent after it was found that a body brought for post mortem examination had been partly nibbled by rats.
The matter came to light on Monday, and the hospital's chief medical superintendent, Dr. Sachin Kishore has sought an explanation from the duo within a day. An inquiry is underway in this regard.
According to officials, a 26-year-old man, a resident of Tarkapur New Colony of Kotwali, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself late on Sunday evening. The police sent the body to the mortuary for post-mortem.
The deceased's elder brother said that the health workers had kept the body on the ground, claiming the freezer was out of order. Ice was then purchased for Rs 2,000 and the body was placed in the mortuary.
When the team of doctors arrived at the mortuary on Monday morning, it was found that rats had gnawed at the body's hands and waist, and approximately half a kilogram of flesh was missing from the back of the waist.
Family members created a ruckus at the mortuary after seeing the condition of the body. The kin accused the hospital administration of negligence and demanded action.
Police and hospital administration arrived and pacified the family. The hospital administration has assured action after ordering an inquiry into the matter. The body was subsequently sent for post-mortem.
Mirzapur divisional hospital's CMS Dr Kishore stated that notices demanding explanations within a day have been issued to on-duty health worker and a sweeper. They have been asked to submit their explanation within a day.
A three-member team has also been formed to inquire into the matter and submit a report to the principal.
Dr. Kishore said further action would be taken based on the inquiry's findings.
He added that placing the body on the ground is wrong. The mortuary has been cleaned....
