Rajasthan: NGT seeks report on toxic marble slurry dumping
JODHPUR, July 6 -- The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday expressed serious concern over the alleged unscientific and hazardous disposal of marble slurry at the Kishangarh dumping yard in Ajmer district, Rajasthan, and has sought a factual and action-taken report from a joint committee within six weeks.
Hearing an application filed by Drupad Malik, a bench of Justice Sheo Kumar Singh and Expert Member Dr. A. Senthil Vel took note of the grave environmental and health hazards arising from the large-scale dumping at a site spread over 82 acres, which receives more than 5,500 metric tonnes of slurry waste daily from over 1,200 marble processing units.
The applicant alleged that the site lacks critical environmental safeguards such as engineered liners, decanting wells, dust suppression systems, and air and groundwater monitoring mechanisms, resulting in contaminated groundwater, degraded agricultural land, and toxic air pollution. It was also submitted that people frequently visit the site for recreational purposes without any health warnings, exposing themselves to hazardous marble dust.
Taking cognizance of these issues, the tribunal said: "A substantial issue of the environment has been raised."
To ascertain the actual environmental impact, the NGT constituted a joint committee consisting of representatives from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board (RSPCB)....
