Dehradun, Jan. 1 -- Tehri Hydro Development Corporation India Limited (THDC) on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the collision between two locomotives transporting labourers inside a tunnel at an under-construction hydroelectric project in Chamoli's Pipalkoti area, officials said. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening and injured 81 people, comprising mostly of labourers engaged at the site. "A probe committee has been formed, which will give its report within a week", said AN Tripathi, chief general manager (Human Resources), THDC. "Most of those injured were provided immediate medical assistance, while a few required hospitalisation for further treatment. First aid was administered to 74 of those injured , who have since been discharged. Seven injured people were admitted to the Gopeshwar Government Hospital Three of them sustained shoulder fractures, while one person suffered a leg fracture. One injured person was treated for injuries to the lip and mouth, and two others complained of general body pain," he added. Ajay Verma, project director for the Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project, said that the incident took place at around 8.30 pm during the designated night shift, when a locomotive transporting labourers and a few officials entered the tunnel and after covering nearly 4.5 kilometres inside, collided with another locomotive parked on the same track, causing both coaches to derail and leaving workers and officials injured. He added that once information about the incident was received by the concerned company officials, another locomotive was immediately dispatched from outside the tunnel to evacuate the injured workers and others from the site. "The injured were safely brought out of the tunnel and transported to the district hospital in Gopeshwar in ambulances for first aid and treatment," he said Verma added that no loss of life was reported at the project site and that the situation was brought under control promptly. The THDC Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project is a run-of-the-river hydropower project being developed by THDC India Limited in Chamoli district.
