Private schools boycott RTE admissions over pending payment
Jaipur, Feb. 18 -- Private schools in the state on Tuesday boycotted the admission process under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, scheduled to begin on February 20, demanding clearance of pending reimbursements from the state government.
President of the Rajasthan School Kranti Sangh Hemlata Sharma said the high court had clearly directed that the government cannot compel private schools to admit students under RTE without ensuring timely fee reimbursement. "There is still no clarity on pending payments from previous years. The government has also not revoked its 2020 order refusing reimbursement for students admitted at the pre-primary level," she said.
She added that private schools would not grant RTE admissions until dues are cleared and revised guidelines are issued clarifying the reimbursement policy. The development comes days after the education department announced the RTE admission schedule, directing schools to begin applications from February 20, with the lottery slated for March 6. In 2020, the then Congress-led government excluded pre-primary classes from reimbursement under RTE, allowing 25% reservation for economically weaker sections but without fee compensation. On January 17, the state high court ruled that private schools must admit 25% students at the pre-primary level under RTE and directed the government to ensure timely reimbursement.
