PRAYAGRAJ, Feb. 5 -- A woman who had gone to the Sangam for a holy dip with her husband was allegedly molested in broad daylight on Tuesday. When her husband protested, a group of youths reportedly attacked him, leaving him seriously injured. He was later admitted to a hospital. Based on the woman's complaint, the Daraganj police have registered a case against unidentified youths and launched a search for the accused. According to the complaint, the couple-residents of the Jhunsi area-were headed to the Sangam on a motorcycle. Near Panda Chowk, under the Mahavir police station limits, two youths on another motorcycle allegedly passed lewd comments and made obscene gestures at the woman. A short distance ahead, the same youths allegedly returned with about half a dozen companions and intercepted the couple. They reportedly molested the woman and thrashed her husband when he tried to protect her. The attackers fled the scene after passers-by intervened. Daraganj police station SHO Gyaneshwar Mishra said a case has been registered and CCTV footage from the area is being scrutinised. A shopkeeper who was seriously injured after colliding with a herd of blue bulls (Nilgai) near Champapur village under Sarai Mamrej police station limits in Prayagraj, died during treatment. The victim, Gopi Chand Gupta (61), was travelling to Bari village via Janghai on January 21 around 1 pm to distribute wedding invitations for his son's upcoming marriage. As he approached Champapur village, a herd of Nilgai suddenly darted across the road, causing him to lose balance and crash. He suffered severe injuries to his head, shoulder and chest in the accident and succumbed during treatment on Wednesday. A woman returning home with her husband late on Tuesday night was killed in a road accident on Shastri Bridge in Prayagraj. She was the wife of the priest of Mankameshwar Temple. A speeding truck allegedly hit the couple's scooter from behind and then ran over her before fleeing the spot. The priest also sustained injuries. According to police, Rajesh Kumar Mishra of Nirmal Nagar, Kydganj, who serves as a priest at Mankameshwar Temple, was returning home with his wife, Milan Mishra (41), on Tuesday evening. A truck coming from behind rammed into their scooter on Shastri Bridge in the Daraganj area. The impact caused both of them to fall, after which the truck ran over Milan. Police have arrested seven members of a gang along with stolen goods and a car used in the crime. On Wednesday, acting on a tip-off, sub-inspector of Nawabganj police station in Pratapgarh, Mithilesh Rajput and his team arrested five accused in Asthan village and two accused from Kuswapur Janwamau road. During interrogation, the arrested individuals confessed to their crime and led to the recovery of 11 stolen batteries, 6 inverters, one stabiliser, a car used in the crime, and an iron cutter used in the thefts. History-sheeter Pappu Sonkar, who was injured in a recent police encounter, died during treatment at SRN Hospital on Wednesday. Police officials said he is suspected to have suffered a heart attack. Pappu Sonkar and his nephew Arvind Sonkar were injured in a shootout with police a week ago. Both were wanted in a jewellery robbery case in the Karchhana area. Police said the two had allegedly shot dead jeweller Chandan Soni near the Majhua canal last month and escaped with gold and silver. In another incident near the Tewariya bridge, the gang was accused of assaulting Kavita Vishwakarma and fleeing with her scooter, silver and cash. On January 28, a joint team of Karchhana police and the Special Operations Group arrested Pappu and Arvind. Both injured men were admitted to SRN Hospital. Hospital sources said Pappu had suffered a bullet injury and a fracture in his leg. He was undergoing treatment and was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday night to remove the bullet. However, before the procedure, he complained of severe chest pain. His condition worsened, and he died on Wednesday afternoon despite being put on a ventilator. After the incident, the ACP of Karchhana and teams from three police stations reached the hospital. DCP (Trans-Yamuna) Vivek Chandra Yadav said preliminary information suggests that Pappu Sonkar died due to a heart attack.
