Police lathi-charge devotees during Prabhat Pheri
Meerut, Jan. 17 -- Tension broke out in Byor Qasimabad village in Budaun district on Friday after police stopped a Prabhat Pheri, calling its route disputed. The situation worsened when police carried out a lathi charge, leaving several villagers injured. The incident took place under the Islamnagar police station area during the month of Magh.
According to villagers, the Prabhat Pheri has been taken out along the same route for many years.
Police reached the village around 5 am on Friday and stopped the procession. When devotees insisted on continuing, tension increased. Police from Bilsi and Ughaiti stations, along with a PAC unit, were called to the spot. SDM Bisauli Rashi Krishna and CO Bilsi also arrived.
Around 8 am, police used batons to disperse the crowd. Several women and youths were injured and were taken to the community health centre for treatment. SP (Rural) Hridayesh Katheria later reached the village and held talks with residents. After discussions, police allowed the Prabhat Pheri to continue along its old route under police supervision. SP (Rural) Katheria said the procession was stopped due to objections from some people. "Later, it was found that the Prabhat Pheri has been taken out on this route for several years," he said, adding there would be no restriction in future....
