Play 'Gumrah' delivers the message honesty, courage never get outdated
LUCKNOW, Jan. 30 -- A play, 'Gumrah', staged by the participants of a month-long winter youth workshop organised by Bhartendu Natya Academy, reflected upon the message that honesty, courage, and self-respect never get outdated. It was staged at Kalamandapam auditorium of Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya on Thursday.
Based on a story written by Vinay Kumar, the play was directed by Privendra Kumar Singh. A tale of the moral struggle of an honest police officer caught between an insensitive system and political pressure was depicted as part of the play.
The story began with a road accident in which the son of an influential politician and an escort died. To protect his public image, the powerful politician misuses the system and has the young woman's identity completely erased from official records, declaring her "unclaimed."
The play revolved around a sub-inspector who refused to accept this deception. Ignoring political pressure, threats, and the fear of transfer, he sets out to uncover the identity of the unknown young woman and locate her family.
This search becomes a symbolic battle between power and truth, and for the protection of human rights. In the end, the play leaves the audience with a question: Does the blindfold on the eyes of the law truly ensure equality for all?
A highlight of the play was its experimental stage design. A rotational stage was designed for the play which visually conveyed how the administration acts as a pivot connecting all sections, while its movement depicted the social shifts between the affluent and the underprivileged....
