Performances, tributes mark Birju Maharaj's birth anniversary
LUCKNOW, Feb. 6 -- The two-day programme organised by Pandit Birju Maharaj Kathak Sansthan to mark the birth anniversary of the kathak maestro concluded at Kala Mandapam auditorium of Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya on Thursday. Kathak dancer Purnima Pandey was present as the chief guest on the occasion.
Students performed the Chaturang form under the guidance of vocal instructor Meena Verma. Set in Raag Yaman and Teentaal, the composition "Waari Waari Jaun Tope Giridhari" immersed the entire auditorium in devotional fervour for Lord Krishna. It was followed by a duet performance by noted dancer Meghranjani from Guwahati, Assam, along with her daughter Marmi Medhi.
They performed "Gaiye Ganpati Jag Vandan Shankar Suvan Bhavani Ke Nandan" followed by a pure Lucknow gharana Kathak presentation set to Teentaal.
The depiction of the horse gait stood out as a highlight, reflecting rigorous practice and technical finesse. In the end they performed 'Tejore Kamala Pothi' and Surdas's bhajan 'Maiyya Mori Main Nahin Makhan Khayo'. The programme culminated with a performance by Kadamb Centre for Dance and Music from Ahmedabad, founded by Guru Kumudini Lakhia.
