Out for late-night tea, MBBS student killed,classmate critical
LUCKNOW, Feb. 17 -- A 23-year-old final-year MBBS student was killed and his classmate critically injured after their motorcycle was hit by a speeding container truck in the Sushant Golf City area of Lucknow in the early hours of Monday, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Dhruv Agrawal, a native of Bijnor district. He was a final-year MBBS student at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences. His friend, Hardik, also 23, a resident of Meerut and also a final-year MBBS student, is undergoing treatment and remains in critical condition.
The accident took place when the two students, who stayed at Lohia hostel on Shaheed Path, ventured out for tea.
According to police, the accident occurred around 1.30am in the service lane in front of the police headquarters under the Sushant Golf City limits. Dhruv and Hardik were on a motorcycle when a speeding container allegedly rammed into their bike near the Dial-112 office.
The impact caused the motorcycle to collide head-on with an oncoming truck, police said.
Passersby alerted authorities, following which police reached the spot and rushed both injured students to Trauma-2 hospital. Doctors declared Dhruv dead on arrival, while Hardik was admitted with serious injuries. His condition is said to be critical but stable.
"Dhruv's body was sent for post-mortem examination. Efforts are underway to identify and take action against the driver of the container involved in the crash. Further investigation is in progress," said Rajeev Ranjan Upadhyay, station house officer, Sushant Golf City.
When asked whether they were drunk, the station house officer said the post-mortem examination report will identify if the deceased was drunk, adding that police are yet to get the report.
It's not known if the two medical students were wearing helmets. Police are yet to get any formal complaint from the family, according to the station house officer....
