New Delhi, Jan. 29 -- The Opposition on Wednesday lodged a rare protest during the President's speech over their demand to scrap the new rural jobs scheme VB-G Ram G and bring back MGNREGA even as the government slammed the ruckus during President's speech.
When President Droupadi Murmu , during her address to the joint sitting of Parliament, highlighted the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Act, the opposition MPs protested.
Congress chief whip in the Rajya Sabha, Jairam Ramesh said, "Today during the Hon'ble President's address to both Houses of Parliament, all Opposition parties most respectfully and in a dignified manner protested the repeal of the bulldozed MGNREGA. The Opposition will use all democratic means to demand the restoration of MGNREGA."
The government hit back, with Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju saying: "Our party was in opposition for more than 50 years, but we've never ever undermined the Constitution and Parliamentary conventions."
Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha's Business Advisory Committee met on Wednesday and allotted 16 hours each to discuss the President's speech and the general budget. The debate on the President's speech would be held between February 2-6 followed by the discussion on the budget between February 10-12....
