VARANASI, Jan. 30 -- A student was injured after being allegedly beaten by students over an old rivalry on the BHU campus on Thursday, police said. Later, some people indulged in stone pelting. However, the police controlled the situation. The injured has been identified as a resident of Ruiya Hostel of the BHU and was admitted to hospital. The student, Piyush, has named some former students who are staying in the hostel illegally. As this information spread, a large number of students gathered at Birla Chowk in support of the student and demanded action against those who beat the student. Seeing the students' anger, the Provincial Armed Constabulary was called in. Rajkumar Sharma, in-charge, Lanka police station, said that a complaint has been received from the victim and an FIR is being registered. Gaurav Banswal, deputy commissioner of police, Kashi Zone, said that some outsiders, who were living in the hostel illegally, fuelled the rivalry between student groups. They have been identified.
