Mobile snatching gang busted in Prayagraj, 28 stolen phones recovered
PRAYAGRAJ, Jan. 14 -- A joint operation by the special operation group, Dhoomanganj police station, and surveillance team of Prayagraj police on Tuesday busted a mobile snatching gang operating in crowded areas of the city. Police arrested three criminals, recovering 28 stolen mobile phones and two motorcycles used in the incidents, officials shared.
The gang primarily targeted people in busy parts of the city, snatching mobiles while riding on motorcycles, they said.
Speaking at the Police Line auditorium, DCP (City) Manish Shandilya said that Pradeep Kumar Saroj, a resident of Kaushambi, had come to Harwara on December 14 for some work. During this time, three bike-riding criminals snatched his mobile phone and fled. The Dhoomanganj police registered a case and began searching for the culprits.
Based on a tip-off, the police arrested Sahil Hashmi, a resident of Bahadurganj Bada Daira; Suhail alias Jigar from Sulem Sarai and Aneesh from Hatiya Bahadurganj near the Nehru Park ruins on Tuesday. Multiple mobile phones belonging to various companies, stolen from different locations, were recovered from the accused. In addition, one bike with a tampered number plate and another without a number plate were also seized.
Police records reveal that gang leader Sahil Hashmi already has over half a dozen cases registered against him for theft and snatching, while Suhail has a prior criminal record as well, the official shared.
DCP Shandilya said that the recovered mobile phones are being identified and efforts are underway to return them to their rightful owners. Legal action against the accused is in progress.
A young woman was killed in a road accident in the Mumfordganj area near Tripathi Crossing on Tuesday morning after being run over by an Army truck.
The incident occurred around 11 am. Police reported that the two-wheeler she was riding reportedly lost balance while she was attempting to overtake the truck after a stray dog suddenly came into her path.
According to eyewitnesses, the sudden obstruction caused the scooty to become unbalanced, throwing the rider onto the road. She was fatally injured when the rear wheel of the Army truck ran over her head, killing her on the spot.
The deceased was identified as Aastha, 22, daughter of Shivcharan, a resident of Sadiyabad. An LLB student, she had recently joined the AG Office as a contractual computer operator and had been working there for only 15 days. She was on her way to work when the accident took place.
On receiving the information, Colonelganj police rushed to the spot, took the body into custody, and sent it for postmortem examination. Army officials also reached the site to collect details related to the incident.
DCP (City) Manish Shandilya said that, based on a complaint filed by the victim's family, Colonelganj police have registered a case using the Army truck's registration number, and further legal proceedings are underway....
