PRAYAGRAJ, May 9 -- A shocking case of sexual assault and human trafficking has been exposed in the Kokhraj area of Kaushambi district, where a minor girl was allegedly subjected to sexual assault and later sold for Rs.70,000 in Kasganj and married off forcibly to a middle-aged man. Police have arrested five accused, including two women, in connection with the case, Kaushambi police said on Friday. The accused have been identified as Sumeet Kumar and Manju alias Phoolmati (both residents of Gausganj under Patiyali police station area of Kasganj), Anuradha (a resident of village Umraipur under Sikandararao police station of Hathras), Shahrukh Hussain (a resident of Nayagaon Alipur under Sarai police station of Etah), and Anshu Jatav (a resident of Nagla Bagiya under Ghiror police station area of Mainpuri). According to officials, the victim, a high school student from Kokhraj area, had left home on March 24 stating that she was going to appear for an examination. When she did not return, her father lodged a complaint with the police the following day. An FIR was registered immediately, and a search operation was launched. The girl was recovered from Kasganj district on April 22. In her statement, the victim revealed disturbing details. She stated that after leaving home in anger, she reached Kanpur, where she met Anshu at a railway station. He allegedly lured her and took her to a hotel, where she was sexually assaulted. She was later kept at a friend's room, identified as Shahrukh Hussain, for two days, where she was again subjected to force, police officials said. The victim further alleged that Anshu, with the help of his female associate Anuradha, sold her to a woman named Manju Devi for Rs.70,000. Manju Devi then allegedly got the minor married to her middle-aged brother-in-law Sumeet. Police said the victim was treated like a bonded labourer after the marriage, not allowed to leave the room, and was also assaulted multiple times. "A teenage girl, who had fled to Kanpur after a fall out with her family, was raped and subsequently sold for Rs.70,000. She was then married off to a middle-aged man. Inspector CB Maurya of the Kokhraj police station and his team have arrested five accused, including two women, involved in the incident. All of them have been formally charged, " said Satyanarayan Prajapat, SP, Kaushambi. Addressing the media persons, Prajapat said on Friday that after the victim's statement, police teams intensified the search for the accused.
