LUCKNOW, Jan. 31 -- Young pacer Shivam Mavi took his career-best haul of seven wickets to help former champions Uttar Pradesh draw level in their first innings with hosts and defending champions Vidarbha on Day Two of their four-day Elite Group A Ranji Trophy encounter at Nagpur on Friday. Mavi took 7/59 as Vidarbha were bowled out for 237 in their first innings in reply to Uttar Pradesh's first innings total of 237 after resuming at the overnight score of 33/0. In their second innings, Uttar Pradesh lost two quick wickets before finishing the day at 75/2, at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Jamtha. Batters Danish Malewar and Nachiket Bhute tried their best to guide Vidarbha take the lead by adding 126 runs for the seventh wicket, they too found Mavi too tough to handle. It was a magical performance by Mavi, whose previous best in first-class cricket was 6/44 and Friday's show allowed him to complete his fifth five-wicket haul 25th match. This was also Mavi's season best as he took 5/18 in the first innings against Nagald at Kanpur in November after scoring an unbeaten 101. Mavi, who missed the last two seasons of IPL due to injury, was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad during December's mini auction for Rs 75 Lakh and his Friday's performance has been a big boost to his confidence ahead of the new season. In fact, Uttar Pradesh could have taken the first innings lead had the catches of both Malewar and Bhute weren't dropped early in the game. Malewar was dropped at slips almost at the beginning of his innings, whereas Bhute was on 17 with scoreboard reading 125/6 when Shivam Sharma dropped an easy catch of him off Kartik Tyagi. From 95/6, Vidarbha looked almost certain for a first innings lead with Malewar and Bhute batting in the middle with scoreboard reading 221/6, but they collapsed to be bowled out for 237 in 63 overs. Malewar struck 80 in 117 balls with the help of 10 boundaries and a six before being caught by Madhav Kushik off Mavi, whereas Bhute scored 85-ball 63 with the help of four boundaries and three sixes before being run out by Kartik Yadav. Earlier, in the very third over of Day Two, drama began with opener Aman Mokhade (28, 53b, 4x4) edged a straight catch for keeper Aditya Sharma off Mavi, who struck on back-to-back deliveries in his next over to push Vidarbha on the backfoot. First, keeper-batter Ronit Binkar (8) offered a regulation catch to Sharma behind the wickets and then Ravikumar Samarth (0) was castled with a perfect incutter. The wickets kept falling on regular intervals even then as Yash Kadam (14) was bowled by Kartik Tyagi. In fact, both Malewar and Bhute looked in total control to take Vidarbha ahead of Uttar Pradesh, but Malewar's departure in the 59th over completely changed the complexion of the game and their struggle came to an end in the 63rd over when Bhute was run out as Mavi took no time to remove the last man Yash Thakur (5) caught by Juyal. In reply, Uttar Pradesh had a poor start in the second essay as opener Abhishek Goswami (0) and Madhav Kushik (8) lost their wickets in quick succession and the side was reduced to 17/2. But thereafter, skipper Aryan Juyal (35*, 71b, 3x4) and Aditya Sharma (25*, 44b, 2x4, 1x6) survived the remaining 90 deliveries of the day without being separated. However, the match is still wide open for a desperate Vidarbha, who need to win this match at all cost and that too with a bonus point to keep their hopes alive for a knockout berth, in the remaining two days of play....
