Maurya takes jibe at SP over KV Corridor land purchase concerns
LUCKNOW, Feb. 20 -- Taking a swipe at the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the Uttar Pradesh legislative council on Thursday, deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said the party would not have been in the opposition had it performed better during its tenure.
His remarks came during Question Hour after SP member Ashutosh Sinha raised concerns over land purchases linked to the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project in Varanasi. Sinha alleged that the land was first bought in the name of a trust and later transactions were carried out in the governor's name.
Rejecting the allegations, Maurya cited a rise in pilgrim footfall, claiming about 7.7 million devotees visited the temple annually during the SP regime compared to nearly 170 million now. "Even Ashutosh Sinha knows the government is doing a good job. If you had worked as well, you would not be sitting in the opposition today," he said.
Earlier, under a Rule 39(a) notice, teachers' group member Dhruv Kumar Tripathi pointed out that Pradeep Kumar, acting principal of Wasi Naqvi National Inter College in Rae Bareli, had not received salary for 43 months. Chairman Kunwar Manvendra Singh ordered an inquiry within 15 days.
SP members later moved an adjournment motion under Rule 105 alleging step-motherly treatment of farmers. After agriculture minister Surya Pratap Shahi's reply, they staged a walkout as the chairman rejected the motion.
Independent members Raj Bahadur Singh Chandel and Akash Agarwal also raised the issue of special incentives for unaided school staff, and the chairman asked the government to take necessary action....
