IMPHAL, Feb. 6 -- Violent protests erupted in Churachandpur district of Manipur on Thursday, with the apex body of the Kuki-Zo communities announcing a social boycott of the three Kuki-Zo legislators who supported the formation of a new government on Wednesday. The Kuki Zo Council (KZC) issued a social boycott notice against the three MLAs including deputy chief minister Nemcha Kipgen for going against the council's decision of not becoming a part of a new government unless the demand for a separate administration from these communities was addressed. KZC later announced total shutdown in Kuki-Zo areas in protest against the decision of the MLAs to support the new government headed by Y Khemchand Singh, who comes from the Meitei community. According to police, protesters came out on the streets of Tuibong area of Churachandpur, a Kuki majority district, attempted to block roads by burning wood and tyres. They also pelted stones at security personnel deployed in the area. In response, security forces were mobilised to control the situation and prevent further escalation. On Thursday afternoon, the 7th session of the 12th Manipur legislative was convened. Addressing the session, chief minister Y Khemchand Singh sought support from all "to bridge the trust deficit that has prevented free movement and return to original homes." "There have been instances in the past when communities in the state have clashed, which is unfortunate... to bring a peaceful atmosphere is a collective responsibility for all of us including all elected representatives," he said. Among the 59 lawmakers of state legislative assembly, 49 lawmakers attended the session physically, while three MLs from among the 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs attended the session virtually....
