Man sets fire to multiple power poles in Lucknow, causes outages; hunt on
LUCKNOW, March 30 -- A suspected serial arsonist targeted electricity poles in the Sultanpur-Sultan Ganj belt under Hazratganj police limits, disrupting power supply to over a hundred homes and causing losses to the power department over a couple of days, officials said.
According to an FIR lodged by junior engineer Alok Kumar Singh, the first incident was reported around 3.35am on March 26 near Sultan Ganj outpost, where a electricity pole cable caught fire. Within half an hour, another blaze was reported near the CID office, raising suspicion.
"Subsequent examination of CCTV footage ruled out a short circuit, revealing that a youth deliberately setting fire to multiple poles while moving along the stretch," the FIR stated.
Based on the footage, officials identified the accused as Vishal, a resident of Eklavya Nagar on Gokhale Marg, and lodged a complaint at the Hazratganj police station.
According to officials, the incidents left around 1,500 consumers without electricity for nearly two hours, while 110 households faced outages lasting up to six hours. The department has estimated losses at around Rs.2 lakh.
Officials said the accused struck again in the early hours of March 27, attempting to set another pole on fire near Asha Apartment under the Ashok Kumar feeder. However, timely intervention helped prevent further damage after power supply was cut and the fire was doused.
