VARANASI, April 12 -- A man allegedly hacked his elder brother's wife to death in Lachchapur village under the Mirzamurad police station area on Saturday, police said. The deceased was identified as Poonam Patel, 32, wife of Sujit Patel. She is survived by her six-year-old son, Harsh. Her husband works as a group D employee with the Railways. According to police, the accused, Ajit Patel, had an argument with his sister-in-law over a personal issue. The dispute quickly escalated. Ajit allegedly picked up an axe kept inside the house and attacked Poonam. Police said Poonam collapsed at the doorstep after suffering severe injuries. The accused allegedly continued the assault even after she fell. Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and informed the police. Assistant commissioner of police (Rajatalab) Ajay Srivastava and station in-charge Pramod Kumar Pandey reached the scene with a police team and arrested the accused. ACP Srivastava said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination and further investigation is under way. During initial questioning, police found that the accused wanted to marry a woman and had asked his sister-in-law to help arrange the marriage.
