Make right to work fundamental right to reduce inequality: P Sainath
LUCKNOW, Feb. 15 -- Senior journalist and author P Sainath on Saturday said inequality in economic, social, gender and linguistic spheres cannot be reduced unless the right to work is included in fundamental rights.
He was speaking at a seminar 'Media in the Age of Inequality' organised by Jan Vichar Manch at the Kaifi Azmi Auditorium in the state capital.
According to him, in 2004 about 30 percent of the 543 Lok Sabha MPs were crorepatis while by 2024, the figure rose to 93 percent. He also said that while wealthy families spend lavishly on weddings, nearly three lakh families in Maharashtra had publicly declared that they were unable to marry off their children due to lack of money.
Sainath said media and journalism have become two different things and profit has become the main objective of media. The seminar was chaired by senior journalist Naveen Joshi. Among those present on the occasion included Madhu Garg, Dr Roop Rekha Verma, Prof Ramesh Dixit and Prof Nadeem Hasnain....
