leopard trapped in ranibagh after frequent sightings in area
Haldwani, May 2 -- Forest officials in Nainital's Ranibagh on Friday successfully trapped an eight-year-old leopard that terrorised people at a residential colony over several days, officials familiar with the matter said.
Mamta Chand, SDO at Nainital forest division, said the leopard was caught making frequent incursions into Ranibagh's Indira Nagar Colony over several days on multiple CCTV cameras installed in the area. "Two days earlier, it had climbed on to a roof and preyed on a dog," said the SDO.
The forest department installed a cage near the village on Thursday after repeated complaints, she added.
"Early on Friday morning, residents heard the leopard roaring. When they stepped out of their houses, they saw that the animal had been trapped in the cage and immediately informed the forest department," Chand said.
A forest department team rushed to the spot and shifted the animal to the Ranibagh rescue centre, forest officials said.
Stressing caution against wild animals, the SDO added, "People should keep outdoor lights on at night, clear dense vegetation and bushes around their houses and avoid venturing out in the dark."...
