Last rites of ajit Pawar, 4 others performed in hometowns
Pune/New Delhi, Jan. 30 -- Thousands of people gathered in Baramati to bid farewell to Ajit Pawar whose mortal remains, wrapped in the national flag, were consigned to flames in his ancestral village Katewadi.
Home minister Amit Shah, road transport minister Nitin Gadkari, BJP chief Nitin Nabin, CM Devendra Fadnavis and NCP founder Sharad Pawar were among the attendees.
At the packed Vidya Pratishthan ground in Baramati, Pawar's sons Parth and Jay lit the funeral pyre as his wife Sunetra, who is a Rajya Sabha member, struggled to hold back tears, while the air resonated with chants of "Ajit Dada amar rahe".
Announcements over loudspeakers urged people to maintain silence and discipline, and to pay their respects to the late leader from their seats, calling it the greatest tribute to Ajit Pawar, known for his strict sense of discipline.
As the funeral pyre was lit, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar sat in silence. His younger brother Prataprao Pawar was also present.
Last rites of other victims of the crash - Captain Sumit Kapur, co-pilot Capt Shambhavi Pathak, Personal Security Officer Vidip Jadhav and flight attendant Pinky Mali -- were also performed in their hometowns on Thursday.
In Delhi's Rajouri Garden, as Captain Kapur's mortal remains were being consigned to flames, several mourners recalled him as a warm-hearted neighbour and a committed professional. In Safdarjung Enclave of the Capital, curtains remained drawn and gates shut as Shambhavi Pathak's body was brought to her residence before her last rites were performed at Lodhi crematorium....
