Knp house searched, hawala network busted
Kanpur, Jan. 24 -- The police on Thursday night seized over Rs 2 crore in cash and 62 kg of silver during a raid at a house in the Collectorganj area, claiming to have busted an interstate hawala and betting network with suspected links to international cricket bookmakers. The raid was conducted late night by teams of the Special Operation Group (SOG) and local police at the residence of Ramakant Gupta in Dhankutti. Five people were taken into custody from the premises, and several electronic devices were seized, police said.
Officers said the scale of the cash haul required a counting machine to be brought in, with the process taking close to four hours. Most of the cash comprised bundles of Rs 500 notes, amounting to around Rs 1.8 crore, apart from notes of Rs 200 and Rs 100 denominations. The silver recovered weighed approximately 62 kg. The accused failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source of either, police said....
