KGMU's paediatric surgery dept performs first robotic operation on 7-year-old
LUCKNOW, Feb. 24 -- After the introduction of robotic surgery for the first time in the Pediatric Surgery Department of the King George's Medical University (KGMU) here, the doctors performed the first operation on February 16.
The patient, Akshaansh, 7, son of Satish Kumar and a resident of Unnao, had been suffering from swelling in both testicles for the past eight months. He came to the Pediatric Surgery Department's OPD, and preliminary examination revealed a hernia in both testicles, which caused significant concern to his parents. The patient was admitted to the department for surgery on February 13, stated a press release shared with the media on Monday.
The robotic operation allowed the patient to simultaneously perform hernia operations on both sides of the patient's scrotum. The department's first robotic operation was successful, and the child was up and walking by the next day and was discharged from the department on February 23, it stated.
With this first successful robotic surgery in the Department of Pediatric Surgery, patients suffering from other medical conditions will also be treated likewise.
This will also enable children, like adults, to benefit from robotic surgery and ensure faster recovery, it stated further.
The surgical team consisted of Prof JD Rawat, Prof Sudhir Singh, Dr Gurmeet Singh, Dr Preeti, and Dr Kritika, with anesthesia provided by Dr Vineeta Singh and Dr Neelkamal. Nursing officers Sanjay, Rita, Rinkesh, and Deepti assisted the team in this crucial surgery, it added.
