KGMU experts' expanded role to help in court proceedings, ease burden on PMHS docs
LUCKNOW, Dec. 2 -- Forensic and toxicology experts of the King George's Medical University will be available round the clock at the post-mortem house at the medical university for the autopsy of claimed bodies also to ease the burden on doctors from the Provincial Medical Health Service (PMHS) and provide sharper inputs to establish the cause of death that will help in court proceedings, officials said.
Earlier, the post-mortem procedures of unclaimed bodies were performed by KGMU's forensic department doctors. The identified bodies were examined by PMHS doctors posted across the different hospitals in the state capital.
As their hospital work was being hindered due to the post-mortem duties, the PMHS doctors had written a letter to the governor, district magistrate and the CMO in October.
The latest move comes after a flurry of letters were exchanged between Lucknow's chief medical officer Dr NB Singh and the KGMU authorities on the issue.
In this connection, CMO Dr NB Singh sent a reminder via a letter to the KGMU authorities on November 28 to forward the schedule of doctors who would do the post-mortem house duty with their name and cell phone numbers to the CMO office on a daily basis.
The November 28 letter was preceded by a similar one sent on November 18.
As per another letter, the KGMU had sent a request to allow the presence of their experts in the post-mortem procedure for both the ide- ntified and unidentified bodies.
Accepting the KGMU's offer, the CMO in a subsequent letter said this move will help in court proceedings and relieve PMHS doctors from the burden of post-mortems, which were in addition to their duties at their respective hospitals.
KGMU spokesperson Prof KK Singh said, "The schedule is being made by the (KGMU) administration and it will be sent along with the name and numbers of the doctors to the CMO office on a daily basis after completion."
CMO Dr NB Singh said, "As soon as the schedule comes from KGMU, it will be a big help determining the cause of death and in court proceedings too."
Around 20 post-mortems are performed at the post-mortem house per day.
This is the only post-mortem house in Uttar Pradesh where around 7500-8000 autopsy procedures are performed annually, as bodies are sent from 52 police stations, including those of the Government Railway Police (GRP)....
