LUCKNOW, Jan. 26 -- Hosts and former champions Uttar Pradesh on Sunday suffered their second worst ever defeat in the its 98-year-old history in domestic cricket when Jharkhand crushed Aryan Juyal and Co by an innings and 301 runs on the last day of their four-day Elite Group A encounter here in Lucknow. Uttar Pradesh's first worst-ever defeat in the history of domestic cricket was in 1952-53 when they lost to Holkar by an innings and 328 runs at Indore, and Sunday's loss was also their worst on the home turf as in 2008-09 they had suffered an innings and 238 runs defeat to Tamil Nadu. Once again, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium proved unlucky for the home side as it was their fifth loss at this venue. They have won just one game and conceded first innings lead in all other six games out of total 12 matches here so far. After resuming at the overnight score of 69/7 while following-on in their second innings, Uttar Pradesh could survive for 28 deliveries on Sunday as the remaining three batters could add just 15 runs in 27 minutes of play before being bundled out for paltry 84 in 27.4 overs. With nine Jharkhand fielders on the off-side, including seven at the slips and point, pacer Saurabh Shekhar first sent overnight batter Madhav Kaushik (9, 38b, 1x4) packing on the very last ball of the first over of the day with keeper Kumar Kushagra taking a sharp catch. Next man Vipraj Nigam (4) got a life even after being caught at fourth slip after a delivery from Jatin Kumar Pandey was declared a 'No Ball' for oversteeping in the following over, but then Shekhar's quick one forced him to edge a regulation catch to Kushagra on the penultimate ball of the day's third over and in his next over he got last man Kunal Tyagi's off stump uprooted with a reverse delivery. Now, Uttar Pradesh's last domestic match this season against hosts Vidarbha from January 29 at Nagpur will remain just a formality as even after securing full seven points, including a bonus point, Uttar Pradesh will not be able to qualify for the knockout for the fourth consecutive season. For Uttar Pradesh's unceremonious exit, everyone in the side, including skipper Aryan Juyal and coach Arvind Kapoor, should own the blame as they chose to field first after winning the toss, and the bowlers bowled wayward to allow Jharkhand batters to post 561/6 before declaring their first innings. Nothing went right even then as Uttar Pradesh batters, except opener Abhishek Goswami (85) and Shivam Sharma (28) could show any resistance even while playing on the home turf. Things worsened when while following-on in their second innings, Uttar Pradesh batters remained falters and barring Aryan Juyal, Siddharth Yadav and Vipraj Nigam no other could touch the double figure mark. Full marks to seamer Saurabh Shekhar, who finished with a bowling figure of 7.4-4-16-15, his maiden five-wicket haul in his seventh first-class match. Besides him, three other pacers Sahil Raj (2/25), Jatin Pandey (2/27) and Shubham Kumar Singh (1/1) also excelled....
