Inquiry ordered into alleged conversion bid
Haldwani, May 3 -- The Udham Singh Nagar district administration has ordered an inquiry into allegations of religious conversions under the guise of worship rituals in Nanakmatta, officials said, adding that a seven-member committee headed by the additional district magistrate (ADM) has been formed and asked to submit its report within 15 days.
According to officials, a religious gathering, described as a 'changaai sabha' (healing prayer meeting), was held on April 19 in Navinagar village of Nanakmatta. Hindutva organisations alleged that conversion activities were being carried out during the event, leading to tensions between two groups.
The situation reportedly escalated into stone-pelting and physical altercations, prompting administrative intervention.
Udham Singh Nagar district magistrate Nitin Singh Bhadauria said the matter appeared sensitive and warranted a detailed probe.
"Prima facie, the issue involves concerns related to law and order, social harmony and public safety. It is necessary to conduct a fair and factual inquiry," he said.
He added that a seven-member panel led by ADM Pankaj Upadhyay has been tasked with investigating the case and submitting an evidence-based report within 15 days.
Officials said the committee includes the additional superintendent of police (Rudrapur), district minority welfare officer, district social welfare officer, additional chief medical officer, the sub-divisional magistrate and circle officer of the concerned areas, along with an inspector from the local intelligence unit....
