VARANASI, Feb. 8 -- In action against the illegal sale of meat and fish in the densely populated area near the temples in Chaukaghat, Varanasi Nagar Nigam's (VNN) animal welfare officer, Dr Santosh Pal, has filed an FIR against eight individuals operating illegal shops in the Chaukaghat fish market. The complaint cites religious sentiments and public health concerns. It states that the illegal operation of the fish market near Chaukaghat (house number S 11/78) is causing significant filth and stench in the area. A famous temple of Hanuman Ji is located within 500 meters of the fish market. The operation of these illegal shops is hurting the religious sentiments of devotees and is also adversely affecting public health. In this regard, these shopkeepers have been issued notices and challans several times before. On January 22, a joint team of the corporation, the food safety department, and the police conducted a drive and closed these shops.
