LUCKNOW, Feb. 7 -- Life is priceless but hazards come cheap. The easy availability of banned kite strings on quick commerce platforms underlines this irony amid a growing concern following a spate of fatal and near- fatal incidents linked to 'manjha'. Priced between Rs.99 and over Rs.500, these products are delivered almost instantly, making access easy even as authorities struggle to curb the circulation of nylon, 'Chinese' and Bareilly 'manjha' on the ground. Several e-commerce and quick commerce apps are openly listing kite strings under multiple categories, including black nylon thread, cotton 'manjha', Bareilly 'manjha' and kite thread with plastic spools of up to 900 metres. Officials have repeatedly warned that nylon and Chinese 'manjha' pose a grave risk to pedestrians, motorists and two-wheeler riders, yet the listings remain active on digital platforms. The issue gained renewed urgency following back-to-back incidents involving banned kite strings, which drew the attention of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, prompting strict instructions to curb the menace. Another incident surfaced on Friday, when Sudhir Kumar, a contract electrician, sustained injuries after a Chinese manjha slit his neck in Gomti Nagar Extension on February 5 around 5pm. He managed to stop his motorcycle and avoid a major accident. Bystanders rushed him to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hos`pital, where doctors provided first aid and later discharged him. Earlier on Wednesday, Mohammed Shoaib, a medical representative, died after a nylon kite string slit his neck while he was on the road in Lucknow. Repeated attempts to contact joint commissioner of police (Law and Order) Babloo Kumar on Friday for his response remained unsuccessful....
