Lucknow, Jan. 22 -- Shaken by the deaths of two 18-year-olds in separate road accidents, Sarojini Nagar MLA Rajeshwar Singh on Wednesday announced a helmet awareness and distribution drive to curb fatalities caused by head injuries. The victims, children of BJP functionaries, died after suffering serious head injuries while riding motorcycles without helmets. One of the teens was riding during dense fog while going to buy milk, and the other was heading to a nearby shop. Calling the deaths "preventable," Singh announced that 1,000 helmets will be distributed this week through CSR support to booth presidents and party office-bearers, urging them to set an example by ensuring helmet use even for short rides. He also highlighted the grim road safety scenario, noting that India records over 1.8 lakh road deaths annually, with Uttar Pradesh leading the tally. Singh added that he would raise the issue with the chief minister, seeking action on accident-prone black spots and stricter punishment for reckless driving.
