Heated Question Hour as treasury, oppn benches trade charges on power issue
LUCKNOW, Feb. 19 -- Sharp exchanges marked proceedings in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Wednesday as the ruling party and opposition clashed over power supply issues and remarks by energy minister AK Sharma during Question Hour, with disputes also emerging over free electricity for farmers and electricity relief schemes.
The confrontation unfolded during Question Hour after opposition members referred to the minister's recent remarks warning officials of strict action for non-performance, invoking an allegory from the Ramayana about an unfailing arrow.
Responding in the House, Sharma said, "That arrow is unfailing and has already been released, which is why several of you (opposition members) are out. If you want to be saved, come to this side and Khannaji (the parliamentary affairs minister) might save you."
Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Yadav objected to the remarks and said the minister was speaking falsely. "If he is speaking false which direction will the arrow go?" he asked.
Opposition member Atul Pradhan alleged that despite having data of farmers, the department was not providing free electricity for irrigation.
Replying to a question, Sharma said over 10 lakh tubewells installed by farmers are receiving free electricity. He informed the House that of 15,64,219 tubewells, about 10.58 lakh are registered and are being supplied power free of cost....
