Govt mulls 20% quota for ex-Agniveers in transport enforcement
LUCKNOW, Feb. 4 -- The UP government is moving closer to extending a 20% reservation for ex-Agniveers in the recruitment of transport enforcement constables, signalling a broader plan to absorb military-trained youth into state services once their four-year tenure ends.
"The transport department has received a formal communication from the state government on the proposal. The department has already conveyed its consent after examining whether the new quota would disturb the overall reservation framework," said additional transport commissioner Sanjay Singh.
This step comes at a crucial juncture, as the first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Centre's scheme is set to complete its service this year. While a limited proportion (25% of the total Agniveers) will be retained in the armed forces, a majority will return to civilian life, prompting states to chalk out employment pathways for them.
Uttar Pradesh had last year announced a similar 20% reservation for ex-Agniveers in police recruitment. The move to include them in the transport department's enforcement wing is being seen as a continuation of that policy, aimed at ensuring a smoother transition from military to civil roles.
Special relaxation in selection process
Transport enforcement constables are recruited through the UP Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC), with candidates required to clear a written examination followed by physical tests and a medical examination.
According to the government's decision, Agniveers retiring from the Army will be given exemptions in the physical test, efficiency test and medical examination. They will also be provided special relaxation in the written examination.
