LUCKNOW, Feb. 6 -- Age is just a number for former national champion in shooting and Arjuna awardee Rachna Govil, who even at 64, is out to reignite her wish to do the wonders at the national level once again. These days, she is shooting alongside 20-odd boys and girls at Lucknow's Chandra Bhanu Gupta Sports Hub at the Bal Bharti School, where one can see former 3000m runner, Govil in action after imparting training to the young kids. Besides putting her best foot forward in the morning, she puts in a lot of effort to keep herself physically fit, doing brisk walking at the KD Singh 'Babu' Stadium for almost an hour before hitting the gym. All changed for Govil last month when she visited Kurukshetra and shot 45 out of 50 in presence of her first coach's Balbir Singh, who declared that Rachna Govil re-started shooting. "It was a big remark for me and only then I decided to go for it again. Now, I am feeling the same zeal and enthusiasm, which I had in my playing days almost 30 years ago. Staging a comeback in a sport like shooting is something quite exciting for me and I wish to re-earn a name for myself," said Govil, an ex-executive director of the Sports Authority of India. Govil, who had a gold medal at the Northern India Shooting Championship at Chandigarh in 1998, and had also equalled the national record then with 381 in 10mt air pistol, is set to start her journey from scratch, and her first target would be to shoot at least 340 in seniors category and 330 in senior masters (above 60) category in the upcoming pre state championship. "It's a process which everyone has to follow to qualify for the further events and I am happy that right now I am shooting much above the set standards," said Govil, who started shooting only in 1997, after excelling in athletics. After training under one Anand Singh in 1976 here in Lucknow, Govil won a bronze medal for India in 1500m event in Five-Nation International Athletics Meet, involving athletes from countries like France, Germany, Russia and Korea. She also won a silver medal with a national record by 12 seconds in 3000m in 1981 before winning a gold medal at the Indira half-marathon at Prayagraj (then Allahabad) in 1985. In fact, Govil has an interesting story to tell about her journey in shooting. After the demise of her husband and famous athletics coach PVV Ravanan in a train accident in 1995, Govil was suggested by a shooter to learn pistol shooting for her safety as she had a seven-year-old son by her side. Though she tried to put his son in rifle shooting, he was too young for that, and this allowed Govil to start rifle shooting on her own, but not for more than 15-20 days at Delhi's Siri Fort Sports Complex as she didn't like it too much. But when she took the air pistol, she felt like continuing and within a few months, she won the Delhi State Championship gold with 360 points. Govil's fine run allowed her to have a wildcard entry in the nationals in 1998, where she shot 381, beating Abha Dhillon (380). "Those were the golden days of my sporting career and despite being in the job in the SAI, I always maintained a balance between sport and job," said Govil, who finished with almost a dozen medals at the nationals before quitting the sport in the end of 1998. Though she re-launched her love with shooting in 2007 and was even among the probables for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, her administrative responsibilities as one of the directors in the SAI forced her to withdraw after attending a few camps. "Now, I don't have any responsibility of jobs, etc., and I am a free bird. I have taken up shooting again just to fulfil my old wish of winning again and at the same time, this passion has allowed me to train the young shooters here in Lucknow," Govil concluded....
