Four children critical after explosion at garbage dump in Kanpur
KANPUR, Feb. 2 -- Four children aged between eight and 10 sustained severe burn injuries following an explosion at a garbage dump in Kanpur's Sachendi on Sunday, sparking panic in the neighbourhood, said police on Sunday.
The injured children, identified as Krishna, Rishi, Kariya and Nihal, were playing near the garbage dump when the explosion took place, police said.
Residents rushed to the spot after hearing a loud blast and found the children lying on the ground with burn injuries. They were rushed to UHM hospital, where doctors said their condition remains critical.
Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred while garbage was being set on fire, and police suspect that a flammable or explosive substance was present in the heap. Officials said burn marks and injuries resembling shrapnel wounds were found on the children's bodies.
Deputy commissioner of police (West) SM Qasim Abidi said a forensic team has been dispatched to the site and an investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the blast....
